Asher Aladjem is the Chief Psychiatrist and a Co- Founder of the NYU/Bellevue Program for Survivor of Torture.
Dr. Aladjem has been a practicing Psychiatrist for over three decades in the New York City Public Health Care Delivery System. As a dedicated clinician he has treated countless number of patients and has trained and supervised many graduating classes of Fellows, Residents and Medical Students.
He is a pioneer in the integration of Psychiatry within Medicine and he was recruited from New York Medical College/Metropolitan Hospital to serve until recently as the Director of Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry at NYU/Bellevue Hospital and the Director of the NYU Fellowship in Psychosomatic Medicine. This area of psychiatry is focused on the diagnosis and treatment of both mind and body and the relationship between the physical and the emotional state of each individual.
A true Global Physician Dr. Aladjem is fluent in six languages and he is practicing Cross- Cultural Psychiatry for the understanding and formulating treatment for the most diverse group of patients. Working in an environment of such Cultural and Spiritual Diversity does require a special skillset to be able to address different forms of expression of suffering, different attitudes towards treatment and the meaning of medications in the treatment of trauma and depression.
Dr. Aladjem advocates for the integration of different Psychotherapeutic modalities with the use of Psychopharmacology in the traumatized immigrant patients. He advances this work both on the level of education for the different clinical perspectives and approaches and with the patients with such diverse attitudes and acceptance of treatment.
